Banxia Houpu Decoction may ease some GERD symptoms, but research is still limited. A small 2024 study found that it helped some patients with throat burning, hiccups, and bloating. Standard GERD medication worked better for heartburn and stomach burning.
Newer research has also found possible benefits from Chinese herbal treatments. But these studies have important limits.
There is no strong proof that Banxia Houpu Decoction reduces acid reflux, heals the esophagus, or provides lasting relief. It is not a proven replacement for standard GERD treatment.
What Is Banxia Houpu Decoction?
Banxia Houpu Decoction is a traditional Chinese herbal formula. It is also called Banxia Houpu Tang or Hange-koboku-to in Japanese Kampo medicine.
The formula comes from the ancient Chinese medical text Synopsis of the Golden Chamber. It has long been used for nausea, digestive discomfort, and a feeling of a lump in the throat.
It contains five ingredients:
- Pinellia (Pinellia ternata): A processed herb traditionally used for nausea.
- Magnolia bark (Magnolia officinalis): Traditionally used for bloating and digestive discomfort.
- Poria (Wolfiporia extensa, also called Poria cocos): A fungus used in traditional digestive remedies.
- Fresh ginger (Zingiber officinale): Commonly used to ease nausea.
- Perilla leaf (Perilla frutescens): Traditionally used for stomach and breathing-related complaints.
These traditional uses do not prove that the ingredients treat GERD.
The formula is of interest because it has been studied for throat symptoms. These include the feeling of a lump in the throat, known as globus sensation.
However, throat discomfort does not always come from reflux. Other conditions can cause similar symptoms.
Can Banxia Houpu Decoction Help Refractory GERD?
It may help some symptoms, but the direct evidence is limited.
Refractory GERD usually means reflux symptoms that continue despite optimized treatment with proton pump inhibitors (PPIs). These medicines reduce stomach acid. Common examples include omeprazole and esomeprazole.
Symptoms that continue during PPI treatment do not always mean acid is still entering the esophagus. Some people have nonacid reflux. Others have a sensitive esophagus or a different digestive condition.
The American College of Gastroenterology’s GERD guideline recommends reviewing treatment and checking for other causes when symptoms continue.
What Did the 2024 Study Find?
A 2024 study by Song and colleagues tested Banxia Houpu Decoction in patients with refractory GERD in China.
The researchers first randomly assigned 89 patients to treatment groups. They later excluded eight patients because they were considered unsuitable for the herbal formula.
This left 81 patients in the final analysis:
- Herbal treatment: 43 patients received Banxia Houpu Decoction prepared for the study.
- Standard treatment: 38 patients received a higher-dose PPI regimen plus magnesium aluminum carbonate, a medicine that neutralizes stomach acid.
Treatment lasted two weeks.
Both groups reported some relief. However, they improved in different ways.
The herbal group reported greater relief from:
- Throat burning
- Frequent hiccups
- Difficulty swallowing
- Bloating after meals
The standard treatment group reported greater relief from:
- Heartburn
- Stomach burning
The herbal formula may help some symptoms more than others. But this does not mean it works better than standard GERD medication.
Why Are the Results Uncertain?
The study had several limits.
Only 81 patients were analyzed. A larger study might produce different results.
Treatment lasted just two weeks. Researchers did not establish whether the benefits would last.
Most results came from symptom scores. Patients reported how they felt. The study did not prove that the formula reduced acid exposure or healed the esophagus.
Eight patients were excluded after random assignment. This may have affected the fairness of the comparison.
The study took place at one hospital. Its results may not apply to everyone with GERD.
The researchers also looked at age and the shape of the valve between the stomach and esophagus. These early findings cannot yet tell doctors which patients might benefit.
What Do Larger Research Reviews Show?
A systematic review combines results from several studies. A meta-analysis uses statistics to look for patterns across those results.
Three reviews published between 2022 and 2026 offer more information about Banxia Houpu Decoction and related herbal treatments.
2022 Review: Ten Clinical Trials
A 2022 systematic review examined ten trials of Banxia Houpu Tang for GERD.
The researchers found better results for several measures of symptom relief in the herbal treatment groups.
However, the trials were small and often poorly designed. Some also used different ways to measure success.
The authors warned that these problems could make the benefits look larger than they really are.
2025 Review: Herbal Treatment Added to Medication
A 2025 review of Chinese herbal treatments looked at patients with refractory GERD.
It found that patients taking Banxia Houpu Decoction with standard medication had a better reported overall treatment response than those taking standard medication alone.
The researchers reported an odds ratio of 5.33, with a 95% confidence interval of 1.05 to 27.16.
In plain English, the results favored the combined treatment. But the wide range shows that the size of the benefit is uncertain.
The finding was statistically significant, but it needs confirmation in better studies.
It also does not show whether the herbal formula works on its own.
2026 Review: More Than 2,200 Patients
A 2026 review in Frontiers in Pharmacology examined 20 randomized trials involving 2,246 people with GERD.
Overall, the researchers found better symptom scores with some Chinese herbal treatments than with standard medication alone.
Some formulas related to Banxia Houpu Decoction showed promising results.
However, the studies tested different herbal mixtures. Some used modified versions with extra ingredients.
The review also found several problems:
- Many studies did not hide which treatment patients received.
- Some treatment comparisons relied on only a few trials.
- Results for certain formulas were unusually large.
- Confidence in many findings was low or very low.
These problems make the results less reliable.
The review supports further study of Chinese herbal treatments. It does not prove that the traditional five-ingredient Banxia Houpu Decoction is an effective GERD treatment.
How Might Banxia Houpu Decoction Work?
Researchers are still studying how the formula might affect digestion and throat discomfort.
Possible Effects on Digestion and Inflammation
Some compounds in Magnolia bark and Perilla leaf have shown effects on inflammation in laboratory studies.
Other ingredients may affect how digestive muscles work or how the body senses discomfort.
These findings offer possible explanations for symptom relief.
But laboratory results do not prove that the complete herbal formula works the same way in people.
Researchers have not shown that Banxia Houpu Decoction reliably strengthens the lower esophageal sphincter. This muscle helps keep stomach contents from flowing back into the esophagus.
Possible Effects on Throat Discomfort
Banxia Houpu Decoction has traditionally been used for globus sensation.
People with globus sensation feel as though something is stuck in their throat, even when no blockage is present.
This feeling may involve muscle tension, a sensitive esophagus, or other factors.
The formula’s possible effect on throat discomfort remains an area of research. Its exact action is not known.
Is Banxia Houpu Decoction Safe?
The long-term safety of Banxia Houpu Decoction for GERD is unknown.
The small 2024 study could not rule out rare side effects. It also did not establish the safety of repeated treatment.
The National Center for Complementary and Integrative Health (NCCIH) warns that some Chinese herbal products contain harmful contaminants, undeclared drugs, or incorrect herbs.
Risks of the Ingredients
Pinellia needs special care. Raw or poorly processed Pinellia ternata contains irritating substances, including calcium oxalate crystals. It should not be used without proper processing.
Other concerns include:
- Allergic reactions: Some people may react to ingredients in the formula.
- Drug interactions: The full range of possible interactions with medicines is not known.
- Contamination: Poor-quality products may contain heavy metals, pesticides, or undeclared drugs.
- Different preparations: Products sold under the same name may contain different amounts or forms of the herbs.
Who Should Avoid Self-Treatment?
Banxia Houpu Decoction should not be used without medical guidance, especially by people who:
- Are pregnant or breastfeeding
- Have liver or kidney disease
- Take several prescription medicines
- Have allergies to herbal ingredients
There is also too little safety research to recommend routine use in children.
Before trying the formula, ask a qualified healthcare professional to review the product and your current medicines.
How Is Banxia Houpu Decoction Prepared?
Traditionally, the five herbs are prepared together in water. Some manufacturers also sell granules or other forms.
The 2024 study used a prepared herbal formula under clinical supervision.
There is no proven safe and effective dose of Banxia Houpu Decoction for GERD. The study’s treatment schedule should not be used for self-treatment.
Can You Combine It With GERD Medication?
A 2025 research review found possible benefits when Banxia Houpu Decoction was added to standard treatment.
However, the safety of combining it with PPIs or other remedies has not been studied well enough.
This is important because herbal ingredients may interact with medicines. Taking several products also makes side effects harder to trace.
Do not stop or change prescribed GERD medication to try the formula.
For more information on other approaches, read GERD Care’s guide to natural remedies and supplements for GERD.
What If Your GERD Symptoms Continue?
If GERD treatment is not helping, the next step is to find out why.
A healthcare professional may recommend:
- Checking your PPI use: Making sure you take the right dose at the right time.
- Upper endoscopy: Using a small camera to look for damage or other problems in the esophagus.
- Reflux monitoring: Measuring when stomach contents flow back into the esophagus. Some tests also measure acid levels.
- Esophageal manometry: Measuring pressure and muscle movement in the esophagus.
- Checking for other conditions: Looking for problems that cause reflux-like symptoms, even when acid exposure is normal.
Simple changes may also help. These include avoiding meals close to bedtime and raising the head of your bed for nighttime reflux.
Food triggers differ from person to person. You may not need to avoid every food on a standard GERD trigger list.
See home remedies for GERD for more ways to manage symptoms.
When Should You Seek Medical Care?
See a healthcare professional promptly if you have trouble swallowing, pain when swallowing, unexplained weight loss, or repeated vomiting.
Seek emergency care if you vomit blood or have black, tarry stools with weakness or fainting.
Severe chest pain also needs emergency evaluation. This is especially important if you have shortness of breath, sweating, or pain spreading to your arm or jaw. These may be signs of a heart problem.
The Bottom Line
Banxia Houpu Decoction may help some people with persistent throat and digestive symptoms. Small clinical studies have found possible benefits, but the results are not conclusive.
More research is needed to confirm which symptoms it helps and whether the benefits last.
For now, it remains an unproven option rather than an established GERD treatment.
